Today in History: On October 31, 1984, India’s Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, was shot and killed by two of her own bodyguards as she walked in her garden. Gandhi was the daughter of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharial Nehru. Both Gandhi and her father attempted to bring peace to India amongst its religious factions. Gandhi ordered a raid on a Sikh temple in Punjab to find extremists. Although death threats followed, Gandhi refused to fire two of her bodyguards who happened to be Sikh. The bodyguards would eventually shoot and kill Gandhi. Riots would break out in the aftermath of her death and over 1,000 peaceful Sikhs were killed in two days following her death.
