Zinn's Last Interview →
This is a wonderful interview with Howard Zinn on Jan 19th. Zinn is interviewed by Bill Bigelow of the Zinn Education Project and Rethinking Schools. Bigelow’s work specifically focuses on bringing Zinn’s teachings into the classroom. Check out his work if you have a chance. Zinn discusses Haiti, youth apathy, curriculum, and answers questions from educators and students.

11,000 of 79,000 Teachers to Lose Jobs in NYC →
Where’s our bailout? What about the hundreds of teachers sitting in rubber rooms? Retirement incentives?
I say we go down to Wall Street and demand them to bail out our education.

Lowell Students vs. Fred Phelps →
When Phelps and his cronies from Westboro Baptist showed up in SF, students from Lowell and other schools took to the streets. I get excited when I see youth participate in social movements

J.D. Salinger, 1919-2010
Hope someone listens.
“I hope to hell that when I do die somebody has the sense to just dump me in the river or something. Anything except sticking me in a goddam cemetary. People coming and putting a bunch of flowers on your stomach on Sunday, and all that crap. Who wants flowers when you’re dead? Nobody.” -J.D. Salinger
My favorite:

To Toussaint L'Ouverture
Below is a poem written by Williams Wordsworth to Toussaint L’Ouverture before he was executed by the French in 1803. The poem does a beautiful job at showing the struggle, resilience, and impact Toussaint and the Haitian Revolution had on the rest of the world. That struggle and resilience is still seen today in the people of Haiti.
TOUSSAINT, the most unhappy of men! Whether the...

Heartworn Highways
“When God created the Heaven and Earth, he created all things. People condemn whiskey, but they have no right to cause he also created barley, rye and if he didn’t think that was good for man then he wouldn’t have let those things grow.” -Uncle Seymour Washington

Frank's Wild Years by Tom Waits
Frank settled down in the Valley, and he hung his wild years on a nail that he drove through his wife’s forehead. He sold used office furniture out there on San Fernando Road and assumed a $30,000 loan at 15 1/4 % and put a down payment on a little two bedroom place. His wife was a spent piece of used jet trash Made good bloody-marys, kept her mouth shut most of the time, had a...

Reflections of a Former Self
So everyone always does these year in review-type things. I have never been able to sit and write about my year in any sort of poetic manner. Plus, I figured nobody would want to read it anyways. But things are different now. 2009 was an interesting year. I saw friends grow and move on to bigger things. I saw family members experience wonderful adventures, and even lost some. I, myself, had...
